Zara Cully, an American character actress, gained recognition for her role as Mother Jefferson in the CBS sitcom “The Jeffersons.” Her acting journey began in theater before she transitioned to television and film, appearing in various TV shows and movies such as “Sanford and Son,” “Roots: The Next Generations,” and “The Waltons.” In the 1920s and 1930s, she was among the first African-American women to pursue a career in radio broadcasting. Cully passed away from lung cancer on February 28, 1978, at 86 years old. Notably, after a 1940 performance in New York City, she earned the title of ‘one of the world’s greatest elocutionists.’
