William Corcoran was an American banker, philanthropist, and art collector who founded the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and contributed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He played a significant role in establishing the National Academy of Sciences and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Corcoran had a keen interest in meteorology, leading him to donate to the Smithsonian for the creation of a meteorological observatory. Interestingly, there was also a former American film and television child actor named William Corcoran, known for his roles in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Batman, and Daniel Boone.
