Toni Morrison, originally named Chloe Anthony Wofford, was a renowned American author, essayist, and professor who delved into the African-American experience through her writing. Among her most celebrated works are Beloved, Song of Solomon, and The Bluest Eye. In 1993, Morrison became the first African American woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, and she earned the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction in 1988 for Beloved. As an editor at Random House, she significantly contributed to the promotion of black literature. Other notable works by Morrison include Sula, Tar Baby, and God Help the Child. She passed away on August 5, 2019, at 88 years old.
