Thomas Spencer Monson (August 21, 1927 â January 2, 2018) was an American religious leader, author, and the 16th President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). As president, he was regarded by followers as a prophet, seer, and revelator. Monson devoted himself to humanitarian efforts and the promotion of family values. He expanded the church’s welfare program and supervised the building of new temples worldwide. Additionally, Monson was a published author, writing several books on topics such as faith and service to others. He received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the community. An Eagle Scout, Monson maintained involvement with the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life, serving on the National Executive Board, and incorporating the organization’s values into his speeches and teachings.
