Sergeant Thomas H. “Boston” Corbett, an English-born American soldier and milliner, is best known for avenging President Lincoln’s assassination by fatally shooting John Wilkes Booth. Initially arrested for disobeying orders, Corbett was later released by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, who referred to him as “the patriot.” In addition to his role in Booth’s death, Corbett served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was appointed Assistant Doorkeeper of the Kansas House of Representatives.
