Stephen Hillenburg, born August 21, 1961, was an American animator, writer, producer, director, and marine science educator. He gained fame for creating the popular Nickelodeon animated television series “SpongeBob SquarePants,” where he served as the showrunner for seasons 1-3 and from season 9 until his death. This iconic show has become the fifth-longest-running American animated series and a significant pop culture phenomenon. Hillenburg’s other notable works include “Rocko’s Modern Life,” “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie,” and “SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom.” Throughout his career, he received multiple awards, such as Emmy Awards and Kids’ Choice Awards. Unfortunately, Hillenburg passed away on November 26, 2018, at 57 years old due to ALS.
