Matthew Jonathan Hyson, widely recognized as Spike Dudley, is a retired American professional wrestler who rose to fame during his tenure in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Dudley was renowned for his high-flying, hardcore wrestling style and his underdog persona. He also competed in Ring of Honor and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), securing various championships in both ECW and WWE.
After leaving WWE in 2005, Dudley briefly worked as a Spanish teacher in Rhode Island, transitioning to teaching following struggles with substance abuse within the wrestling industry. His students commended him for his engaging teaching approach and ability to connect with them.
Dudley’s notable achievements include his time in ECW and WWE as part of The Dudley Boyz wrestling stable and winning the Tag Team Championship twice in ECW. He engaged in feuds with WWE wrestlers such as John Cena, Billy Kidman, and Paul London. Although often overshadowed by his “brothers” Bubba and D-Von, Dudley’s underrated career is noteworthy, particularly for his ability to defy the odds despite his smaller stature.
