Scott Weiland was a renowned American musician and singer-songwriter, recognized for his unique voice and significant contributions to the 1990s alternative rock scene. He was the lead vocalist for the rock bands Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, and also worked on solo projects such as “12 Bar Blues” and “Happy” in Galoshes. Additionally, he collaborated with the supergroup Art of Anarchy and released a memoir, “Not Dead & Not for Sale,” in 2011.
In his autobiography, Weiland shared that he initially introduced himself as “Scottie Weiland” due to self-consciousness about his first name sounding “too country.” Eventually, he dropped the “ie” and became known simply as Scott Weiland. Although there were rumors that he legally changed his name, he never confirmed this.
A notable aspect of Weiland’s life was his admiration for David Bowie, who he often cited as a major influence. In a 2013 Rolling Stone blog post, Weiland praised Bowie’s album “The Next Day” as a prime example of artistic growth. Bowie’s impact can be heard in several of Weiland’s songs, such as Stone Temple Pilots’ “Unglued,” which has a Bowie-like vibe.
Weiland passed away on December 3, 2015, at the age of 48. Despite his untimely death, his music continues to resonate with fans, and his legacy as a talented and influential musician endures.
