Her journey on the ice began at the tender age of three when she first laced up her skates. Growing up in Great Neck, Hughes was homeschooled throughout her skating career to accommodate her rigorous training schedule.

Hughes’ skating career was marked by numerous achievements and accolades. She won the U.S. National Championships in 2001 and 2002, becoming the youngest women’s singles champion in U.S. history at the age of 16. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, Hughes delivered a stunning performance, capturing the gold medal in the ladies’ singles event. Her victory was particularly remarkable as she overcame a fall during her short program to deliver a flawless long program that secured her the Olympic title. This win marked the first time an American woman had won the ladies’ singles title since Kristi Yamaguchi in 1992.
