Ruth Orkin (1921-1985) was a trailblazing American photographer, photojournalist, and filmmaker celebrated for her depictions of modern city life. She gained recognition for her iconic 1951 photograph “American Girl in Italy,” which captured a woman being admired by a group of men. Orkin’s portfolio also included photographs of famous personalities such as Lauren Bacall, Doris Day, and Alfred Hitchcock. Alongside her husband, Morris Engel, she directed and produced films like “Little Fugitive” (1953) and “Lovers and Lollipops” (1955).
