Dame Rebecca West, originally named Cicily Isabel Fairfield, was a renowned British author, journalist, and critic. She gained prominence for her reporting on the Nürnberg trials, where Nazi war criminals were prosecuted. Among her most famous works are “Black Lamb and Grey Falcon,” a travelogue about Yugoslavia, and “The Return of the Soldier,” a World War I novel. Other significant works include “Harriet Hume,” “The Judge,” and “The Meaning of Treason.” West was also a political activist and a member of the feminist movement. As an amateur geologist, she collected rocks during her travels, which inspired a character in her novel “The Fountain Overflows” who shares the same hobby.
