Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger, known as Pope Benedict XVI, served as the spiritual leader of over 1 billion Catholics worldwide from 2005 to 2013. A distinguished theologian and Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he made significant contributions to Catholic thought and teachings.

Born in Germany, Benedict XVI was ordained as a priest in 1951 and later became a renowned professor of theology. In 1977, he was appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising, and in 1981, he was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II.

As Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Benedict XVI played a pivotal role in safeguarding Catholic doctrine and promoting orthodoxy. He was instrumental in drafting the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a comprehensive compilation of Catholic beliefs and teachings.

In 2005, following the passing of Pope John Paul II, Benedict XVI was elected as the 265th Pope of the Catholic Church. During his papacy, he emphasized the importance of traditional Catholic values and teachings, issuing several encyclicals that addressed theological and moral issues.

Benedict XVI’s papacy was also marked by his commitment to interfaith dialogue and outreach. He fostered relationships with other religious leaders and promoted understanding among different faiths.

In 2013, Benedict XVI made the momentous decision to resign from the papacy, becoming the first pope to do so since the 15th century. He continued to live a life of prayer and study in retirement, passing away in 2022 at the age of 95.
