Philip Seymour Hoffman is known for his supporting roles but gained further recognition for his lead billings as the charismatic leader Lancaster Dodd in ‘The Master’ (2012) and in the biographical film of the writer Truman Capote in ‘Capote’ (2005). The latter earned him 23 awards including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and Critics Choice Award.
In his first cinema appearance in an independent film titled ‘Triple Bogey on a Par Five Hole’ (1991), he used the name Phil Hoffman. Later on, he adopted his grandfather’s name Seymour to distinguish him from another actor with the same name.
He has always aspired to be an athlete but it ended when he suffered an injury that prevented him to play several sports. A blessing in disguise, it led him to the discovery of his passion for acting.
