Peter Mark Roget was an English physician and philologist who is best known for creating the comprehensive classification of synonyms, “Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases,” first published in 1852. Roget served as a private physician to William Petty, the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, and later succeeded Thomas Percival at Manchester Infirmary. He also lectured on physiology and became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in 1809.
