Nicole Mitchell, an American flutist, composer, and music educator, is renowned for her innovative and versatile approach to jazz. She gained prominence through her work with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and the Black Earth Ensemble. As a solo artist, Mitchell has released several albums, including “Mandorla Awakening” and “Secret Escapades.” Her numerous accolades include the Doris Duke Artist Award and the Women’s History Month Honoree Award.
Starting her career in Chicago, Mitchell performed on the streets and worked for Third World Press. She later formed the all-female ensemble Samana and became a member of the AACM. Recognized as one of the most inventive flutists in jazz, Mitchell has been a standout performer at art venues and festivals worldwide. Hailing from Chicago’s creative music community, she is an award-winning flutist, conceptualist, and composer.
