Nathan Tate Davis (February 15, 1937 â April 8, 2018) was a renowned American jazz multi-instrumentalist, skilled in playing the tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute. He gained recognition for his collaborations with notable artists such as Eric Dolphy, Kenny Clarke, Ray Charles, Slide Hampton, and Art Blakey. As a distinguished jazz master, Davis made significant contributions to the jazz community through his performances, compositions, and educational efforts. His most acclaimed works include the albums “The Hip Walk” and “Suite for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” as well as his collaborations with Freddie Hubbard and Thelonious Monk. Additionally, Davis was a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters fellowship.
