McLean Stevenson (November 14, 1927 â February 15, 1996) was an American actor, comedian, and businessman. He is best known for his role as Lt. Col. Henry Blake in the CBS sitcom “M*A*S*H” (1972â1975).
Stevenson began his career in theater, appearing in several Broadway productions. He also had a recurring role on the television series “The Patty Duke Show.” In 1972, he landed the role of Blake on “M*A*S*H,” which became a huge success and made him a household name.
After leaving “M*A*S*H,” Stevenson continued to act in television and film. He had leading roles in the sitcoms “The McLean Stevenson Show” (1977â1978) and “Hello, Larry” (1979â1980), and he also appeared in several movies, including “The Towering Inferno” (1974) and “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972).
In addition to his acting career, Stevenson was also a successful businessman. He owned several restaurants and nightclubs, and he also had a line of clothing. He was active in politics and served as the mayor of Brentwood, California, from 1982 to 1986.
Stevenson died of a heart attack on February 15, 1996, at the age of 68. He is survived by his wife, Carole, and his two children, Jeff and Lindsay.
