Maria von Trapp, born on January 26, 1905, was an Austrian singer and a member of the Trapp Family Singers. She gained fame for inspiring the hit musical and film, The Sound of Music, where Julie Andrews portrayed her. Maria’s memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, published in 1949, served as the basis for the 1956 film The Trapp Family and the 1959 Broadway musical The Sound of Music. Besides her musical career, Maria was an environmentalist and advocate for sustainable living, dedicated to reforestation, composting, recycling, and organic gardening. She passed away on March 28, 1987, at 82 years old.
An intriguing fact about Maria von Trapp is that she was born on a train while her mother was en route to a hospital in Vienna. Sadly, her mother died shortly after her birth, and her father passed away when she was just 6 years old.
