Okakura KakuzÅ, also known as Okakura Tenshin, was a prominent Japanese scholar and art critic who significantly contributed to the evolution of modern Japanese art in the Meiji era. He is best known for his work “The Book of Tea,” which delves into the philosophy of Japanese tea culture. Other distinguished works include “Ideals of the East,” “The Awakening of Japan,” and “Japan, Its Art, Its Characteristics.” Additionally, Okakura held the position of head of the Japanese section at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and organized the notable “Exhibition of Chinese Art” in London in 1935.
