Joseph Heller (May 1, 1923 â December 12, 1999) was an American author renowned for his satirical novel Catch-22, a dark comedy set during World War II. This postmodern literary masterpiece has become synonymous with absurd or contradictory choices. In addition to Catch-22, Heller wrote several other notable works, such as Something Happened, God Knows, Closing Time, and No Laughing Matter, a memoir co-authored with Speed Vogel about his struggle with Guillain-Barre syndrome. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and later taught creative writing at various universities. In 1972, Heller was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
