Joseph Carey Merrick, widely known as the “Elephant Man,” was a British individual with severe deformities who gained public attention in the late 19th century. As a prominent curiosity in Victorian London, Merrick’s condition has come to symbolize human dignity and compassion. He appeared in various circuses and freak shows in London due to his deformities, and his other notable accomplishments include forming friendships with prominent figures of the time, engaging in charitable work, and his eventual hospitalization and death. In 1884, Merrick’s autobiography pamphlet, “The Autobiography of Joseph Carey Merrick,” was published to accompany his exhibition. Despite his physical appearance, Merrick was known for his kindness and gentle nature. His skeleton is currently housed at Queen Mary University of London and has been utilized as a learning resource since 2005. An intriguing aspect of Joseph Carey Merrick’s life is that he was born with a congenital defect, which led to his physical appearance resembling that of an elephant, earning him the nickname “The Elephant Man.”
