Sir Joseph John “J. J.” Thomson was a brilliant physicist who made significant contributions to our understanding of the atom and the nature of electricity. Born in England, he excelled academically and became the Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Cambridge in 1884.

Thomson’s groundbreaking experiments with cathode rays led to his discovery of the electron in 1897, a fundamental subatomic particle that revolutionized our understanding of matter. He also proposed the “plum pudding model” of the atom, which laid the groundwork for further exploration of atomic structure.
