JJ Barea, a Puerto Rican former professional basketball player, is now the head coach for the Mets de Guaynabo in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN). After playing college basketball at Northeastern University, he joined the Dallas Mavericks in 2006, becoming the seventh Puerto Rican in the NBA. Barea is best known for his contributions to the Mavericks’ 2011 NBA Championship win and his time with the Minnesota Timberwolves before rejoining the Mavericks in 2014. After a 14-year NBA career, he retired from professional basketball earlier this year. Barea is also recognized for his philanthropic efforts in Puerto Rico through The Barea Foundation, which he established in 2011 to support children and families in need.
