He had a successful career with Celtic, winning nine Scottish League championships and playing a crucial role in the team’s European Cup victory in 1967. Among his other notable achievements were being named Scottish Footballer of the Year twice, being inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame, and having a statue erected in his honor outside Celtic Park.
Affectionately known as “Jinky” and “The Lord of the Wing,” Johnstone was considered one of Scotland’s most gifted players. In 2002, he was voted Celtic’s greatest player of all time by fans. He competed against legendary players such as Johan Cruyff, George Best, Denis Law, and Bobby Charlton in the European Cup semi-final of 1967/1968.
Sadly, Johnstone battled motor neurone disease, a degenerative illness affecting the nervous system, which ultimately led to his death in March 2006 at the age of 61. Despite his untimely passing, his legacy as one of Scotland’s greatest footballers endures.
