Jaime Escalante was a renowned Bolivian-American educator who gained national recognition for his dedication to teaching math in Los Angeles’ inner city. He was particularly successful in preparing underprivileged and “unteachable” students for the Advanced Placement Calculus exam. Escalante’s inspiring story was depicted in the 1988 film “Stand and Deliver,” with Edward James Olmos portraying him. In addition to his teaching career, Escalante participated in various educational programs and initiatives. He passed away on March 30, 2010, after battling bladder cancer.
