Elmer Russell “Jack” Knight (January 12, 1895 â July 30, 1976) was a talented American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. Hailing from Pittsboro, Mississippi, he had an active career from 1922 to 1927, during which he played in 72 games for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, and Boston Braves. In addition to his major league career, Knight also served as a minor-league manager for the Cleveland Indians, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs. He was not only known for his impressive pitching skills but also for his ability to recite Rudyard Kipling’s poems. Some of his most notable achievements include playing for three major league teams, managing in the minor leagues, and having a keen interest in observing surgeons perform operations.
