Jack Hawkins was a prolific British star who achieved considerable success playing strict but sympathetic military men in films, notably in the films ‘Angels One Five’ (1951), ‘The Planter’s Wife’ (1952), and ‘Mandy’ (1952). He underwent an operation to insert an artificial voice box when his voice began to fail.
Hawkins’ career spanned over four decades, during which he appeared in more than 100 films. He was known for his versatility, playing a wide range of roles from heroes to villains. Some of his most notable performances include his roles in “The Third Man” (1949), “The Bridge on the River Kwai” (1957), and “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962).
In addition to his film career, Hawkins also appeared in numerous television productions. He won a BAFTA Award for Best British Actor for his role in the television series “The Power Game” (1965-1966).
Hawkins died of esophageal cancer in 1973 at the age of 62. He is considered one of the most iconic actors of British cinema.
