He began his career writing for The Muppet Show before transitioning to stand-up comedy, where he performed with George Carlin and appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Burns also wrote and produced for various shows, including The Andy Griffith Show, The Chevy Chase Show, and Hee Haw. He gained recognition for his on-screen work in the sitcom The Burns and Schreiber Comedy Hour alongside partner Avery Schreiber and was a member of the Second City improv group in the early 1960s. Burns appeared in the film The Mundane Adventures of a High School Girl, contributed to the script for The Graduate, and had a brief role on The Andy Griffith Show as Warren Ferguson, a deputy sheriff. Unfortunately, his character was not well-received and was dropped after 11 appearances. Burns passed away at the age of 86.
