For three decades, Hosni Mubarak governed Egypt with an iron grip, earning him the moniker “the pharaoh.” As the nation’s president from October 1981 to February 2011, Mubarak’s authoritarian regime was characterized by corruption and human rights abuses. However, he also presided over economic growth and modernization in Egypt. His most significant accomplishment was upholding the country’s peace treaty with Israel. Other notable events during his tenure include Egypt’s involvement in the Gulf War and hosting the 2008 African Cup of Nations. Regrettably, Mubarak’s legacy is tainted by his repressive rule and the extensive protests that culminated in his eventual resignation. He died in February 2020 at the age of 91.
