Hank Gathers Jr., an American college basketball player, was known for his exceptional skills on the court as a member of the Loyola Marymount Lions in the West Coast Conference (WCC). He made history as the second NCAA Division I player to lead the nation in both scoring and rebounding during the same season. Unfortunately, Gathers’ promising career was cut short when he tragically passed away at the age of 23 due to a heart condition, making his story one of the most devastating in sports history.
Throughout his career, Gathers achieved numerous accomplishments, including being named a consensus second-team All-American in 1990. His life and the bond with his teammate Bo Kimble have been documented in various articles and documentaries. In 2020, Loyola Marymount University honored Gathers by unveiling a statue in his memory. His son, Aaron Crump, continues to bear the emotional weight of his father’s untimely death.
