Grant Wood (1891-1942) was a renowned American painter who gained recognition for his iconic depictions of the rural American Midwest. His most famous work, “American Gothic,” is considered one of the most recognizable paintings of the 20th century. Wood was also known for his various other accomplishments, such as serving in the US military during World War I as an artist designing camouflage scenes. He taught art to junior high school students in the Cedar Rapids public school system from 1919 to 1925. Furthermore, Wood’s studio and decorative art and design work were featured in a 2006 exhibition titled “Grant Wood’s Studio: Birthplace of ‘American Gothic’.” As a prominent figure in the American Regionalist movement, Wood advocated for a realistic style and focused on depicting local subjects.
