He gained prominence for his roles in the TV series “As Time Goes By” and the film “The Island”. Some of his other significant works include the TV shows “Our Mutual Friend (1998)” and “Wycliffe”, as well as the movies “The Missionary” and “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”. In 1985, Middlemass received the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the stage play “The Herbal Bed”. He passed away on September 8, 2006.
