Ordained as a priest in 1958, Arinze served in various capacities in the Archdiocese of Onitsha, including as Auxiliary Bishop. In 1967, he became the first indigenous Archbishop of Onitsha, playing a crucial role in the Second Vatican Council. Elevated to the College of Cardinals in 1985, he became the first Cardinal from Nigeria.
