Estelle Getty was a renowned American actress and comedian, most famous for her role as Sophia Petrillo on the popular TV show, The Golden Girls. Her exceptional performance in this role earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy, as well as a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In addition to her work on The Golden Girls, Getty appeared in films such as Tootsie and Stuart Little and portrayed Harvey Fierstein’s mother in the Broadway play Torch Song Trilogy. A dedicated Democrat, Getty also participated in the 1992 documentary “The Last Party,” voicing her concerns about the political sway of the religious right.
