Ellen Ochoa, born on May 10, 1958, is an American engineer, former astronaut, and previous director of the Johnson Space Center. In 1993, she made history as the first Hispanic woman to travel to space during a nine-day mission on the Space Shuttle Discovery. Ochoa later assumed the role of director at the Johnson Space Center in 2013, becoming the first Hispanic and second female to hold this title. With over 970 hours logged in space, she has been honored with NASA’s Distinguished Service Medal.
