Desiderius Erasmus, a Dutch Christian humanist, Catholic theologian, educator, satirist, and philosopher, was born in Rotterdam in the late 1460s. He is regarded as a key figure in the Northern Renaissance. Erasmus is best known for his 1509 essay, “In Praise of Folly,” which was first published in 1511. Additionally, he contributed to the Greek translation of the New Testament and advocated for the study of classical literature. Among his other notable works are “The Education of a Christian Prince,” “The Complaint of Peace,” and “The Handbook of the Christian Soldier.”
