Darren McGavin, born William Lyle Richardson on May 7, 1922, in Spokane, Washington, was an American actor best known for his roles in the television series “Mike Hammer” and the film “The Man with the Golden Arm.” He was the son of Grace and William Richardson and attended the University of California, Los Angeles, before leaving to pursue an acting career.
McGavin began his acting career in the late 1940s, appearing in small roles in films and television shows. He gained recognition for his portrayal of Mike Hammer in the 1950s television series “Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer.” Throughout his career, he appeared in numerous films, including “The Man with the Golden Arm” (1955), “The Great Escape” (1963), and “Bullitt” (1968). He also had a successful television career, starring in the series “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” (1974-1975) and “The Rockford Files” (1974-1980).
McGavin received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” (1975) and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor â Television Series Drama for “The Rockford Files” (1978). He was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In his personal life, McGavin was married three times, first to Kathie Browne (1949-1969), then to China Lee (1969-1974), and finally remarried Kathie Browne in 1982. He had two children, Melanie McGavin and York McGavin. McGavin served in the United States Army during World War II and was a talented artist and sculptor. He also wrote several books, including “Curtain Call: Reflections on an Actor’s Life” (2001).
