Caroline Aherne (24 December 1963 â 2 July 2016) was a multi-talented English actress, comedian, writer, producer, and director. She gained recognition for her roles as the sharp-witted chat show host Mrs Merton, various characters in The Fast Show, and as Denise in The Royle Family, which she also co-wrote. Aherne received BAFTA awards for her work on both The Mrs Merton Show and The Royle Family. Her other notable works include Mrs Merton & Malcolm, Early Doors, The Fattest Man in Britain, and Gogglebox. Tragically, Aherne passed away in 2016 at the age of 52 after a battle with cancer.
