Billy Batson, also known as Shazam, first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 in 1940, created by artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker. He is a young orphan who is chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam to be his champion. When Billy says the magic word ‘Shazam’, he transforms into the adult superhero with the powers of six mythological figures: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.
Since the original writeup around 2019, Shazam has continued to be a popular character in DC Comics and has been featured in various comic book series, animated TV shows, and live-action films. In 2019, a live-action film titled “Shazam!” was released, where he was portrayed by actor Zachary Levi. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $366 million worldwide. A sequel, titled “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” is scheduled to be released in March 2023.
In addition to the live-action films, Shazam has also been featured in several animated TV shows, including “Justice League Unlimited” (2004-2006), “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” (2008-2011), and “Young Justice” (2010-present). He has also appeared in several video games, including “Injustice: Gods Among Us” (2013) and “Mortal Kombat 11” (2019).
