Bill Russell, a renowned basketball player and coach in the Hall of Fame, was born on February 12th, 1934, in Monroe, Louisiana. As a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, he consistently battled racism and social injustice. Russell made history as the NBA’s first exceptional defensive center, playing for the Boston Celtics and leading them to 11 NBA championships. With five NBA Most Valuable Player Awards and 12 All-Star appearances, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 for his significant contributions to both sports and society. Russell passed away on July 31, 2022.
