Bert Lahr, born Irving Lahrheim on June 13, 1895, in New York City, rose to prominence as a comedy, vaudevillian, burlesque, and screen actor. He left school at age 15 to pursue a juvenile vaudeville act, which led him to the Columbia Burlesque Circuit.
Lahr’s career took off in the 1920s when he began performing in Broadway musicals and revues. His comedic talents and eccentric characters made him a fan favorite. He made his film debut in 1930 and went on to star in over 60 movies throughout his career.
Lahr’s most famous role is undoubtedly the Cowardly Lion in the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz.” His portrayal of the lovable and fearful lion is considered one of the most iconic and beloved characters in cinema history. He also starred in notable films such as “Merrily We Live” (1938), “The Road to Morocco” (1942), and “Always Leave Them Laughing” (1949).
