She was an American actress and singer who rose to fame for her portrayal of Phoebe in the 1950 film “All About Eve,” starring alongside Bette Davis and George Sanders. In addition to this notable role, Bates appeared in other popular films such as “The Caddy” (1953) and “Cheaper by the Dozen” (1950). She also found success on television, with guest appearances on shows like “Perry Mason” and “77 Sunset Strip.” Despite enduring personal challenges, including a lobotomy in the early 1950s, Bates persevered in her acting career and was widely admired for her talent. Sadly, she took her own life on March 18, 1969, in Denver, Colorado.
