Angelica Church (née Schuyler; February 20, 1756 â March 6, 1814) was a notable American socialite and a significant figure in American history. As the eldest daughter of Continental Army General Philip Schuyler, she was also the sister of Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton. Angelica is best remembered for her close connections with the Founding Fathers, particularly her brother-in-law, Alexander Hamilton, with whom she shared a deeply intimate relationship that sparked much speculation.
For sixteen years, Angelica lived in Europe with her husband, British MP John Barker Church, and was known for her friendships with prominent figures such as Benjamin Franklin, the Marquis de Lafayette, and Thomas Jefferson. She is an essential character in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical “Hamilton,” where she is portrayed as a strong and intelligent woman.
