Yang Shangkun was a Chinese Communist military and political leader, president of the People's Republic of China from 1988 to 1993, and one of the Eight Elders that dominated the party after the death of Mao Zedong.

Yang Shangkun (3 August 1907 â 14 September 1998) was a prominent Chinese Communist military and political figure who served as the President of the People’s Republic of China between 1988 and 1993. He was also a member of the influential Eight Elders, a group that held significant power within the party following Mao Zedong’s passing. Yang is best known for his involvement in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. In addition to his political career, he studied politics at Moscow Sun Yat-sen University and was a member of the Communist Party of China from 1926 to 1990.
