After honing his skills at the University of Buffalo, Toles embarked on his professional journey in 1978 at the Buffalo Courier-Express. His talent soon caught the attention of The Washington Post, where he became a staff editorial cartoonist in 1985.

Throughout his tenure at The Washington Post, Toles consistently pushed the boundaries of political commentary.
