Toby Segar, better known as Toby Runner, is an American former middle-distance runner and Olympic medalist. Born in Austin, Texas, he rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s as one of the world’s top 800-meter and 1500-meter runners.

Runner’s athletic journey began at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, where he excelled in track and field. He continued his success at the University of Texas at Austin, where he won multiple NCAA titles and set American records.

Throughout his professional career, Runner represented the United States in numerous international competitions, including the Olympic Games and World Championships. His crowning achievement came at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he captured the silver medal in the 800 meters. He also won a bronze medal at the 1991 World Championships and multiple gold medals at the Pan American Games.

In addition to his Olympic and World Championship success, Runner achieved numerous other accolades. He was named “Athlete of the Year” by Track & Field News in 1988 and received the prestigious James E. Sullivan Award, recognizing the top amateur athlete in the United States. He was also inducted into the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2012.

After retiring from competitive running, Runner transitioned into coaching and has mentored several successful athletes. He resides in Austin, Texas, where he remains actively involved in the sport and various charitable organizations.
