Sherman Alexander Hemsley (February 1, 1938 â July 24, 2012) was an American actor renowned for his portrayal of George Jefferson on the CBS television series “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons.” Additionally, he played Deacon Ernest Frye on the NBC series “Amen” and B.P. Richfield on the ABC series “Dinosaurs.” Hemsley’s other notable works include appearances in “Sister, Sister,” “American Pie Presents: The Book of Love,” and the military collectibles TV show “Tales of the Gun.” He was nominated for an Emmy Award and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
