Michael Antonio Cimino was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and author who gained fame with his Vietnam War film ‘The Deer Hunter’ (1978). This critically acclaimed movie won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Cimino also wrote screenplays for ‘Silent Running’ and ‘Magnum Force’ and was known for his obsessive attention to detail and pursuit of perfection. Although initially criticized, his film ‘Heaven’s Gate’ (1980) has developed a cult following in recent years. Cimino passed away on July 2, 2016.
