Louis Farrakhan, born Louis Eugene Walcott on May 11, 1933, is an American religious leader and black supremacist who leads the Nation of Islam (NOI), an African American movement that merges elements of Islam with Black nationalism. He became a member of the NOI in 1955 and rose to its leadership in 1978. Farrakhan is recognized for his contentious views on race and politics, as well as his support for black empowerment. Among his notable works are “The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews,” “Message to the Blackman in America,” and “A Torchlight for America.” Additionally, he has participated in social and political initiatives, such as the Million Man March and the campaign to liberate political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal.
