Jonathan Elmer was a distinguished American physician, theologian, and senator from New Jersey, who gained recognition for his significant contributions to medicine, especially in the treatment of smallpox. As a member of the Continental Congress and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, Elmer played an instrumental role in the founding of Princeton University, where he served as a trustee. He also greatly influenced the development of the Presbyterian Church in America.
During the American Revolution, Elmer served in the New Jersey militia and was appointed surgeon-general, responsible for overseeing medical care for injured soldiers. He regarded his service during this time as one of his proudest accomplishments. Notably, Elmer was also an American politician affiliated with the Pro-Administration (Federalist) Party.
